Big Sur
Redwoods against the Pacific. Book early; there are only four.
Santa Cruz
Surf town with a working pier and the best light in winter.
June Lake
A loop road, four lakes, and the eastern Sierra behind them.
Tahoe City
North shore. Ski in the season, swim in the four weeks that are not.
Alameda
An island in the bay, twenty minutes from the city and nothing like it.
Truckee
A railway town at 6,000 feet that kept its main street.
Palm Springs
Mid-century houses under mountains. Go between October and April.
Idyllwild
Pines at 5,000 feet, an hour up the hill from the desert floor.
